The Beach Reserve with its long tarmac road is particularly suitable for wheelchairs and we do have mobility scooters for hire - see this link    Electric and some manual wheelchair users can get around the short circular route that takes in Lime Kiln Cottage, River Mouth and the Gooders, Parkes and Denny Hides. Royal Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, Kent

Toilet facilities for wheelchair using passengers are currently available at Hythe, Dymchurch, New Romney and Dungeness stations.
The railway has coaches adapted to carry wheelchairs. With on-board ramps, panoramic windows and four seats for accompanying helpers, these coaches are available on any train by prior arrangement. Wheelchair accessible carriages are also available on the day on a first come, first served basis.
Gift shops at Hythe, New Romney and Dungeness are easily accessible for wheelchair users.
The Model Exhibition (New Romney) has the use of a stair lift for passengers with limited mobility.

Knole House (NT Property)

  • Parking is available for Blue Badge holders, 145 metres from the Visitor Centre.
  • Drop off zone located outside the front of the house.
  • In the showrooms, wheelchair access is limited to the Great Hall.
  • Seating is available throughout the showrooms.
  • An iPad with information and films is available in the Visitor Centre and Great Hall.
  • We offer sensory tours of the showrooms for blind and partially sighted visitors. Please enquire and book at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Access to the top of the Gatehouse Tower is via 77 steep spiral steps. There are two rooms to stop and explore on the way up.
  • Accessible adapted toilets in the Porter's Lodge (at the entrance) and in the Conservation Studio.
  • Manual wheelchairs can be borrowed on the day from the Visitor Centre.
  • A mobility scooter is available to hire Monday-Saturday. Please book at least 24 hours in advance.
  • There are some paved areas in the park but much of the ground is uneven and steep in places.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the property.

Shorne Park

The main toilet facilities include a unisex accessible toilet that includes a baby-changing facility.

The second block is open summer weekends and school holidays. This facility has a unisex accessible toilet and a separate family toilet with baby changing facilities.

Kent & East Sussex Railway

Our facilities have been carefully designed with the mobility impaired visitor in mind. There are parking spaces for Blue Badge holders near to the platforms at Tenterden Town and Northiam Stations and accessible toilets at Tenterden, Northiam and Bodiam. We are proud to boast a specially designed coach called Petros, which is fitted with ramped wheelchair access, wide aisles, moveable seating and an accessible toilet.

Some of our other carriages have ramped access too and there is full wheelchair access to the shop and Station Refreshment Rooms at Tenterden Town Station. The Colonel Stephens Railway Museum has level access with 42" aisles. The Tenterden ticket office is fitted with an induction loop.

We recommend that visitors with special needs or specific requirements telephone our Booking Office (01580 765155 Mon-Fri 09:30 - 17:00; Sat & Sun 09:30 - 13:00) for friendly assistance: accommodation may be reserved by telephone on any train service at no additional cost. A carer ticket is available for registered carers. These tickets may only be purchased by telephone or in person on arrival. When collecting your carer ticket, we ask that you produce one of the following documents: Entitlement to Disability Living Allowance (for children under 16) or Personal Independent payments (for those aged over 16); Attendance Allowance or Carer's Allowance letter of award; Incapacity Benefit book, or a letter notifying the recipient that the benefit has been awarded; A Certificate of Visual Impairment; A letter from a GP or consultant (dated within the last 12 months) confirming the need for a full time carer.

High Elms Country Park

Shire Lane, Orpington  BR6 7JH

250 acres of woodland, nature centre, ice well, formal gardens and wildflower meadows. Located on the edge of the North Downs on the rim of the Thames Basin.

Lovely on-site café with accessible toilets. 

  • There are four disabled parking spaces in the main public car park off High Elms Road, we ask that where possible visitors use this car park to reduce traffic through the park.
  • There are also two disabled parking spaces adjacent to BEECHE, this can be accessed off Shire Lane (service entrance), please note there is a speed limit of five-mile per hour through the park.

Baby changing facilities are available in the public toilets and in BEECHE when the visitor centre is open to the public (see opening times).

High Elms is home to two 'Trampers'.  These are all-terrain wheelchairs designed for use over rough ground, mud and grass.  If you are interested in using these to access High Elms Country Park please contact the Parks and Greenspace team.

Accessible Boat Trips, Maidstone

We offer a unique experience of the River Medway from 1 hour trips to 3 hour cruises (with commentary). The Kentish Lady is also the perfect venue for your wedding reception and/or private party.

Providing easy access for standard wheelchairs, the Kentish Lady has excellent facilities including washrooms, heating and a fully licenced bar. While waiting for the boat to dock, you can relax and enjoy the scenery at our Refreshment Kiosk.

*Please note, our office and the Kentish Lady are both closed on Mondays.

Samphire Hoe, Folkestone

Samphire Hoe is a new piece of land created by Eurotunnel during the construction of the Channel Tunnel.

Samphire Hoe covers a 30-hectare site at the foot of the famous Shakespeare Cliff, between Dover and Folkestone (Kent).

Located between Dover and Folkestone in Kent, Samphire Hoe is a place for both wildlife to thrive and people to enjoy.

Wheelchair and pushchair access

Samphire Hoe is wheelchair and pushchair friendly. There are toilet facilities including those for the disabled (RADAR key) and a baby changing room.

There is a recommended 'access for all' way around the Hoe. The route follows the front path, signposted "West shore via the Hoe" passing through the chicane. The full circuit is 2km long. The section through the Hoe is tarmac; the sea wall is smooth concrete with two ramps giving access to and from the middle terrace providing good sea views. The average gradient is 1:15 with some steeper sections and occasional cross slopes maximum 1:25.

Lullingstone Castle, Eynsford

The World Garden is accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter except for the polytunnels.

The ground floor of the House is accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter but the first floor is not. There are 27 steps up to the first floor.

The Church is also accessible.

Wheelchairs are available upon request and there are concessions available for those with a disability.

  Lullingstone is open on Fridays (except Good Friday), Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays between March and October.
World Garden Open:
Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays plus Bank Holiday Mondays: 12 noon - 5pm (for selected Special Events we open at 11am). Last entry to the Garden is at 4:30pm.

Turner Contemporary is fully accessible for visitors. Exhibitions at Turner Contemporary are free. Please consider supporting our work by making a donation when you visit. Your support helps us to realise our vision to make world-class art accessible to all.

Turner Contemporary overlooks the sea and is in the vicinity of many beautiful beaches. We ask that our visitors work with us to take care of the inspirational environment that surrounds the gallery.

There is a ramp to the main entrance and café, as well as an internal lift to all upper floor galleries. 

Seven disabled parking spaces are available on the piazza at the front of the gallery, as signposted. 

We have two wheelchairs available for visitors to use. Do ask a member of staff, call ahead on 01843 233 000 or email if you require one.

If you have limited mobility and would like to explore Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest come and use our free off road mobility scooter (Tramper).

To avoid disappointment we ask that people book 2 weeks prior to their visit.

With the Tramper you are able to explore both the National Pinetum and Forest.

Beaches with All terrain wheelchairs~Thanet


Beach Within Reach wheelchairs are available for use from 10.00 to 16.00 every day including Bank Holidays from mid-May until the beginning of September.
They are sited on the following beaches. Minnis Bay, West Bay, St Mildred’s Bay, Westbrook Bay, Margate Main Sands and Viking Bay in Broadstairs.  Ramsgate Main Sands wheelchair is currently available at weekends only and this can be subject to change. The wheelchairs can be booked in advance using the booking form on the location pages but without a confirmation from the charity the booking can not be guaranteed. Wheelchairs can be made available at some of the smaller bays on request only. They can also be used throughout the year by prior arrangement. Please call us on 07432 648275 for further details.


Wildwood Discovery Park

Over 200 native animals set in 40 acres of beautiful ancient woodland.

Carers get free admission.  

Disabled facilities: Includes disabled parking area, accessible path-ways and ramps throughout the park, disabled toilets and free wheel-chair and mobility scooter loans available on request.

Mobility scooter loans: Please speak to the shop about booking your scooter and terms of use, by phoning on 01227 209621. Please note that our two scooters sometimes get booked out so please book early to avoid disappointment. Wildwood mobility scooters have weight limits of 21 stone which cannot be exceeded.

The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge

The Beaney has an accessible entrance at Best Lane, with step free access into the building, a platform lift and a flight of ‘easy going’ steps, which are comfortable for the ambulant disabled and allow for push chairs and other mobility equipment.

The building has accessible toilets on all levels plus baby changing facilities. Our split level reception and library counters have been used throughout to allow access for both standing and seated visitors.

A 12 space disabled car park is also available at the rear of the building, along with accessible public toilets.

To assist the visually impaired, we also have braille signage and maps available.

Canterbury Roman Museum

Access to Roman level is via a lift*, then level access throughout. The museum is fully accessible for people with disabilities and we offer a range of activities including tactile tours and multi-sensory object investigation sessions for blind and partially sighted people.

We extend our concessionary rate to guests with a disability.

Hall Place & Gardens

A stunning Tudor House with magnificent gardens on the banks of The River Cray in Bexley.  

The historic house is on two floors, with level or ramp access throughout. There is a lift to the first floor and ramps as an alternative to steps. The nursery and glasshouses are also accessible to wheelchair users. There are a limited number of hard standing paths throughout the formal gardens and designated parking for disabled drivers which are l located nearest the large stone gate to the site.

The approach to the house is via the Nursery and Visitor Centre, a distance of approximately 100 yards. Seating is available along the route, and two wheelchairs are available for use on site for those who find walking difficult. We also have two mobility scooters that can be borrowed by those that are familiar with how to use them.

Dover Castle

 Land train with wheelchair lift to transport customers between car park, medieval restaurant and NAAFI restaurant. The land train is equipped with a wheelchair ramp, however please note that this is suitable for conventional wheelchairs only, and is not able to accommodate larger mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs.

Wingham Wildlife Park

Wingham, Kent

At the entrance area there are plenty of wheelchairs for hire, which are free of charge to use – all we ask is that a set of car keys or similar are left with reception whilst the wheelchair is in use.

Animal enclosures have either glass viewing windows set at seating height or wire mesh sides with a push off barrier – such barriers have been set to ensure that viewing is not interrupted for wheelchair users.

The grounds in the park are accessible via tarmac paths which in some areas may be on a slight incline, however the whole park is accessible with no steps.

One essential carer is admitted free (proof required, see website)

We also have a fully accessible toilet by the main reception which is complete with an adult changing bench and hoist.  Please note that this room is locked and you will need to get this key from reception for access, and we ask that you please bring your own sling to fit the standard fit hoist.

County Square has a dedicated Shopmobility service to help those who may have difficulty getting around the shops.  Managed by our helpful Customer Service team, we can provide both electric scooters and manual wheelchairs for people who have difficulty walking without assistance. This service is available seven days a week for a small fee, which is donated to charity. For bookings and more information call 01233 621196.

There are disabled toilets located on the same level as the yellow car park (level 01) – one floor up from the red car park (level 00) which are accessible by lift from the car parks or on South Square near Muffin Break and opposite Super Drug.

The Glades has a dedicated Shopmobility Centre. You can access our new Shopmobility home via car park level 2 Orange, location D. Wheelchairs and other mobility options are available for hire and staff are always on hand to offer specialist advice on your needs. You can take your pick from a range of wheelchairs and powered scooters.

Our scooter hire charges will increase from £3.00 to £4.00 for up to 4 hours hire. We no longer require the £20.00 returnable deposit so please ensure you have your valid identification when hiring one of our scooters and wheelchairs.
